The Most Interesting Thing Google Announced This Week

It was not the model. It was the price, the context length, and where the model is being placed by default.

Google's advantage in AI has never really been the model. It is distribution. Search, Android, Workspace, Chrome: billions of people who will use an assistant because it is already there, not because they went looking for one.

Distribution beats benchmarks

A model that is slightly behind on evaluations but present in the place people already type will get more real usage than a better model behind a separate login. That has been true of every consumer technology and it is true here.

The pricing signal

Aggressive per-token pricing on long-context models is the announcement that changes what gets built. When bulk work becomes cheap, whole categories of product become viable that were not the month before.

The privacy footnote

An assistant embedded across search, mail and documents sees an unusually complete picture of a person. The convenience is real. So is the concentration. Worth noticing which one gets discussed at the keynote.
